Elon Musk Reveals Test Site for Futuristic 'Hyperloop' System

The Lone Star State could soon be the new testing ground for the most futuristic transportation system in the world.
On Jan. 15, Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced a preliminary plan to build a test track for the Hyperloop, his proposed high-speed transport system, in Texas. Musk first revealed the idea for this "fifth mode of transportation" (i.e., not a car, train, plane or boat) in August 2013. Since then, the billionaire entrepreneur has been fairly tight-lipped about how the project is coming along.

But during a speech at the Texas Transportation Forum on last week, Musk said he is planning to build a 5-mile (8 kilometers) track to test prototype versions of the pods that could one day travel the Hyperloop at speeds of up to 760 mph (1,220 km/h). After the announcement, Musk tweeted that the track will likely be built in Texas and will be "for companies and student teams to test out their pods.

Move Over, Siri! New Software Could Make Better Personal Assistants

You can already use your smartphone to locate the nearest Thai restaurant or find your way to the cheapest parking garage. But soon, you may be able to use your device to plan your entire day — from what bus you should catch in the morning to which restaurant you should swing by on your way to the airport.
A new software program that integrates with a phone's voice recognition system (such as Apple's computerized assistant, Siri) serves as both travel adviser and taskmaster. It can tell you what time the next bus will arrive, but it can also tell you to hustle if you're running late or whether you have time to grab a cup of coffee on your way to the bus stop.
The program, which is being developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), works by allowing users to specify their preferences — for example, by telling the software if they're willing to forgo going out for breakfast in order to catch the right bus.

"The idea is that you really have a dialogue with this system. You say what your goals are, and then it says either 'Yes, I can do it; here's the plan,' or, it says, 'No, I can't do it — here's why I can't, and here are some other options,'" said Brian Williams, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT and leader of the Model-based Embedded and Robotic Systems (MERS) group, which is developing the software.
The program, known as the Personal Transportation System, or PTS, was originally conceived as a joint project between the MERS group, the Center for the Study of Language and Information at Stanford University and aerospace giant Boeing, Williams told Live Science. Boeing tasked the researchers with creating an interactive system for a so-called Personal Air Vehicle — essentially, an autonomous flying taxi.

Water Bounces Right Off This Super-Repellent Material

Using lasers, scientists have created a new material that is so water-repellent that droplets can bounce straight off of it. The surface could be used for everything from preventing ice from developing on airplane wings to creating self-cleaning toilets, the researchers say.
Scientists created the water-hating material by laser-etching a microscopic pattern on a metal surface. And unlike traditional chemical coatings, the new material will not wear off, they said.
"The water falls towards the surface, and is repelled and bounces off the surface," study leader Chunlei Guo, an optical physicist at the University of Rochester in New York, said in a YouTube video. "This is achieved by creating a unique pattern of surface structures at micro- [millionth of a meter] and nanoscales [billionth of a meter] with our laser processing technology.

The laser-etched pattern makes the surface strongly water-repelling, or hydrophobic. It's much more repellent than typical chemical coatings, like the Teflon in nonstick frying pans. Teflon-coated surfaces need to be tilted at nearly a 70-degree angle before a water droplet will slide off, whereas the new material only needs to be tilted at less than 5 degrees, the researchers reported yesterday (Jan. 20) in the Journal of Applied Physics.
The surface also has self-cleaning properties. As water droplets bounce off of it, they pick up dust particles, the researchers said.
To create the new material, Guo and his colleagues used powerful, but very short, laser pulses to etch a platinum, titanium or brass surface. Each laser pulse lasted about a quadrillionth of a second, but reached a peak power equivalent to that of the entire power grid of North America, the researchers said.
Guo and his team tested the material's self-cleaning properties by applying dust from a vacuum cleaner to the material's surface. They found that they could remove about half of the dust particles using only three drops of water, and they were able to remove the dust entirely with about a dozen drops, the researchers said. The result was a completely dry, spotless surface.
There are numerous potential applications for this water-repelling material, the scientists said. Laser-etched coatings on airplanes could prevent dangerous ice from building up on the wings. Etched surfaces could also be used to keep toilets clean in developing countries, where water is scarce —a use that has drawn interest from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which helped fund the work.

In previous work, the researchers used a similar laser-patterning technique to turn metals black by making them very optically absorbent. The combination of these light-absorbing and water-repelling properties could produce more efficient solar panels that wouldn't rust and would require less cleaning, the researchers said.
There are still a number of challenges to overcome, however. Currently, it takes an hour to etch a 1 inch by 1 inch (2.5 by 2.5 centimeters) piece of metal, and this process needs to be sped up, the researchers said. The team also plans to apply the method to nonmetal surfaces.
